Does Cognos 8.4 support IP printing?

Hi,

We use IP printing in our network environment (printers have their own network interface card and IP address and are not connected to a Windows server). I tried to create a printer and used the IP address as the network address in Cognos 8 but that didn't work. I also tried to create a printer with a UNC IP address but that also failed.

The error code in the log is "RSV-DST-0016: The print request failed. Verify that the printer name is valid."

Any help will be appreciated.

Yes, it is definitely doable, however it's been a long time since I've set it up and at the moment I am working with 8.2.
What I do remember is that aside from all the Cognos definitions what it came down to was the Acrobat Version. I know it sounds a little odd, but try changing the Acrobat version to 6 or 7 and try it again.
If this doesn't work for you I will try to get you more info on this one, but don't give up as I've been through all those error messages, as well, and worked it out. Good luck!

Thank you for your response.

I heard several things on problems with the Acrobat version, but it's not very clear to me.
Should I have a version of Adobe Reader on the Cognos server? Now only the clients have Adobe Reader installed.
If so, can I simply install the latest version (9.3)?

Ruben,

Please check if your Printer Name contains more than 16 characters. Cognos wont recognize the printers with longer than 16 characters. Renaming the printer-name to something shorter would help.

Please let us know if this helps.

Thank you for your response.

I renamed the printer to 'Test' in Cognos and tried again with '192.168.1.42' and '\\192.168.1.42' as the printer network address. Both failed with 'RSV-DST-0016 The print request failed. Verify that the printer name is valid.'

Hi Ruben

The printer name itself has to be changed. I believe this would be your IT, that would make the change. They would have to go into the print-server and rename it. Please confirm that the name is more than 16 chars before renaming.

I hope this helps.

Shaam.

Hi Shaam,

We're not using a print server. Our printers have their own network interface card with their own ip address.

My apologies, I missed the part about NIC and IP.

Is it possible to set a user friendly name for the printer? rather than an IP address.

RubenvdLinden

I don't understand what you mean.
The name in Cognos is a user-friendly name, only the network address contains the ip address (which should be correct if Cognos supports IP printing).

It worked for me.Make sure the 'print spooler' service is running on report server.Else it wont work. Also make sure you can access your printer from report server by typing \\servername\printername.
Hope this helps.
