Problem:
For some reason the Cognos service hangs and fails to responds till you manually go and restart the service.
I check in the error logs of Cognos server, it shows following error

Runtime Exception stack trace:
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

As per the below link
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21344109

Changed the Maximum memory in MB to 1536 (Since server having 3 GB RAM).
But after that the Cognos service fails to start.
throwing the error

[ERROR] CFG-ERR-0106 Cognos Configuration did not receive a response from the Cognos 8 service in the time allotted.
Check that Cognos 8 service is available and properly configured.

Help me to fix this problem.

thanks

Make it slightly smaller then 1536 (as long as it's devidable by 8 )
The Cognos 8 startup will register this memory block at the OS, and you only have 2 gig user mode memory
space to play with in total. It means there's not much left for the bibusses to consume.
Usually the java stack get's consumed on an environment with a lot of switching users, running a small number of reports.
If that is the case, you should start thinking about a dedciated content manager.
Therefore some description of your environment would help.

Thanks Smiley,
Yes, I made it 1472, that is the maximum I can give.
We are using a dedicated CM (Seperate Databse server).
MS SQL server 2000 is the CM database.

Let me see how the performace now after changing the mem size to 1472.

thanks.

You are using a dedciated content store (database), not a dedciated content manager (application tier; java servlet)
As for performance; as i said earlier you have 2 gig user mode memory space to devide between java.exe and the bibusses. The more you give to java, the less there is to calculate reports. (so reports with local processing suffer)

johnpenna

set it to 1024 in cognos connection.

We had some horrific issues with memopry leakage..

We increased the memory to 16GB!!!! from 4...Still had the problem..We had to restart the services after running a 40page investor report..You could see the process not releasing in task manager...

basically a cognos consultant in Ottowa told us to redesign our FM model and reports...

This seem to work..Make the SQL more effecient..Increasing the memory wont allow the reports to run faster just allows more reports to run at once.
