There is no huge difference. We have big unix and windows servers here and asked our Cognos Sales rep when we bought everything which would be best o to run it on. Their answer was "either one, what ever is most comfortable for you".
We opted for Windows because we had an extra server lying around :)

I was sceptical at first as well and did lean more toward Unix as first but everything seems to work very well and without a hitch on Windows

Salesmen are not good people to determine where COGNOS Products run best.  My project could only run on UNIX and it has proven much more difficult to install and upgrade than with windows.  All of the classes I have taken for CRN (from Cognos and others) were all taught on Windows platforms.  One of the instructors from Cognos said that the Cognos developers all develop on Windows platforms.  Regardless of where you install CRN, you still need to install Framework Manager on a PC (preferably with connectivity to your CRN UNIX server).  I hope this clarifies the situation - if I really had a choice, I would install on Windows.

What kind of difficulty did you have to upgrade CRN in UNIX ??

I did it in both Unix and windows ( prod and dev) without any problem for 1.0 to 1.1
I mean the only difficulty in Unix , it s to get enough rights to be allowed to install something but then it s as straight forward as in windows.
I even have been using X-window , so configuration manager in Unix is very like the windows one.

Then Framework manager is a windows application , and connecting it to a windows or a unix plateform is exactly the same as you only give server name and port numbers , nothing related to the plateform used.

My project is on SUN boxes with Solaris 8 as the OS.  We run in a different portal and use ORACLE.  We started with an installation of 1.1, upgraded to 1.1 MR1, then on to 1.1 MR2.  We are required to support all three versions.  We ran into trouble each time trying to upgrade the existing product which produced several somewhat obscure errors.  If not for this forum and the Support Talk/Cases at COGNOS we would not have succeeded in getting the installations to run.  A lot of our problem is that each SUN workstation has required a different OS configuration, some have the database on them, others just a client.  Some of the errors were not indicative of the actual problem so they were obviously more difficult to track down and correct.  As for windows, I wanted to run FM 1.1, FM 1.1 MR1 and FM 1.1 MR2 on my PC, but was unable to.  To get FM 1.1 MR2 to work on my PC, I had to uninstall everything else (even CRN).  If your installations on UNIX went as easy as you suggest, you are indeed lucky. I hope your luck will continue if you ever upgrade to COGNOS 8.
