Hi everyone,

It's my first post and I am installing Cognos Reporting 8.2 on Windows XP.
I am using the Configuration tool and i have a problem when I configure the notification mail server. I set the SMTP with host:port of my mail server and when I test, it says :
[Validate mail server properties.]
1. [ ERROR ] The mail server cannot be reached.     ???

But with my mail server is working when I check with outlook.

Could someone help me? Any trick! Any document about it. I have read the instalation manual.

Best Regards.

Just a few suggestions:
Make sure that the Account and password that you provided in Cognos Configuration > Notification is proper. Also, make sure your default sender is set properly. Try restarting your Cognos 8 service via Cognos Configuration.

By any chance do you have McAfee VirusScan Console installed on the Cognos server?

Also, more helpful information:

"You can test the connectivity from a Windows Server in a Dos Command window, by following these steps:

1. Log on interactively to the actual Cognos 8 server.
2. Select Start > Run > Type cmd, or Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
3. In the Command window, type the following text: telnet mailservername 25 where mailservername is the name or your SMTP mail server.

If you see a message like below, then there is a connectivity problem between the Cognos 8 server and your e-mail server, and you should contact your Network Administration team to resolve this. The problem may be the server name, or port number, or firewall.
...Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connect failed"

Else, then something else must be wrong (such as the information provided in Notification in Cognos Configuration).

I have the same problem, telnet works fine, Cognos does not send out the mail

Where are the logs? Nothing in C:\Program Files\Cognos\crn\logs indicating an error.

Yea, I have MCAffee installed? Any issues with that?

Thanks,

I had the same issue, but this is what I did:

- From the Access Protection Properties inside the McAfee Viruscan Control, unchecked the Block checkmark from the rule called "Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail" (I leave the Report checkmark on) .

And this fix the issue.
