In one of it's official papers on Excel 2007 capabilities Cognos claims that it will stick to the limitations of Excel2003 and older versions that have 64k rows and 256 columns.

However if we run an Excel output (version 2007) from Cognos 8.1 then we are perfectly able to produce output that exceeds 256 columns.
Does anyone know if Cognos documentation is wrong on this point with version 8.3.  Or did really put a limit om the product that wasn't there with version 8.1?

I think it depends on the Excel client being used. If You are using Excel 2007 client you should be able to have more than 256 columns, but if you are using Excel 2003 client then the limit is 256 columns.... etc...

The Cognos document is fairly explicit in restricting the output to 256 columns and 64k rows , even with Excel 2007.
Obviously the limit exposed with the used Excel version is there , but it is strange that they would do this with Excel 2007 as well
