Strange CAC Behaviour

Hello

I hope someone can help.

I have a 'development' environment consisting of 3 laptops (Turion 64 bit dual core 2GB ram).  One Laptop is set up as the main server, Windows 2003 Standard SP2, Application server, DNS, DHCP, File Server, DC.  It has a full install of Cognos Planning 8.1.  The other two laptops are running Windows 2003 Standard SP2, have Contributor server components installed, and are attached as job servers to the CAC on the main server.  The main server is also set as a job server for use on one model.

Everything works OK in that the job servers work and the models run.

BUT  The CAC is giving strange information.  What I mean is that if for example you are running a reconcile job the CAC only shows one job server being used, YET when looking at task manager on the others the CPU is at 100%.  I am also finding old redundant/completed jobs are being shown as running on the job servers, YET, nothing is displayed in CAC->Tools->Maintenance->Remove Expired Job Tasks.

Has anyone any ideas of what I can do to fix?

Thanks

Stuart

PS,  the PAD has been rebuilt a couple of times.

What protocol are you using to connect?  You can lose connection between job servers and stuff will still run because the key linkage of a job server is between job server and database (OLE-DB), not between CAC/admin server/job server (Http or COM).

So, if an update kills your permissions or links between servers (like in IIS), stuff will still run.

Your service and COM+ package both running under the same domain account on all servers?

StuartS

Hello

The Job servers are linked using http.

The Planning73 COM+ and Cognos (cer4) service are running under the LAN admin account.

Your suggestion of the database link meaning the job servers still run sounds plausible.

All Servers have the same permissions/account on COM+ and Service.

I am puzzled as to what it can be.

SomeClown

You could try using the COM protocol to see if it is IIS-related.

(you have MSADC directories defined on all servers?)

Job servers connections still test okay?

StuartS

Yes the job servers test ok.  Yes MSADC is defined on all servers.

Ill have a play with COM and see if as you suggest it is HTTP.

Thanks

Is it common to see all CPU's use 100% when some jobs are running?

SomeClown

Yes, which is one reason why virtualization and hyperthreading don't provide benefits for a Planning platform.

StuartS

Hi

Thanks for answers.
Yes CPU's are at 100%.

Ive got some other leads to look at surrounding DNS, ill keep you informed.
