HelloCognos

Hi, :) :)

I'm trying to understand better if Cognos Analytics can be used for Predictive Modeling. If there is any sample whitepaper or details explanations on how Cognos was used to create several charts/tables to show the probabilities of certain events occurring or even forecasting certain occurrence of activities during specific times. Any document that show how the approach in Cognos went or even sharing any codes that was used line Move-Total, etc.
Thanks for your time. 8) 8)

I am not sure but I would assume that Watson analytics is more compatible for this.

HelloCognos

Ok, I take it Watson Analytics doesn't come with IBM Cognos licenses, right?

HelloCognos

Do you guys have a good example of using move-total for FORCASTING based on some increment of quantities. Like
show an increment of 10 quantities for cars per the next 5 years....I'm planning to show this increase
or decrease in a Line or Bar Chart.

Thanks a lot! Sorry for taking more of your time. :)

IBM have just made a couple of big announcements in this area. Firstly, they have announced end-of-life for Watson Analytics. Secondly, Cognos Analytics 11.1 has been announced, and this includes the same kinds of data science smarts as Watson Analytics (plus a lot more really good stuff too!)

My understanding is that the Analytics Explorer license in CA 11.1 permits use of the new Explore capabilities (including being able to ask the "what drives..." smart data discovery type questions).

Cheers!

HelloCognos

Thanks for the reply. I think I got it. Yes, there are examples of having forecasting type of report done. The one that I found which is just using Analytics is the below,

So, I was looking for some additional samples that shows this type of information or even documents that utilizes Cognos to forecast or show future growth or Target like the attachment shows.

Thanks for your time.

I would not call it a Forecast report. It is comparing actuals vs target, not forecasting anything.

I don't think Cognos has any forecasting ability. Ofcourse, you can add another column to calculate the growth rate of the last few years, add a certain percentage to it and call it a prediction and show it in the graph.

:o  Hope it doesn't take Cognos down ! Would hate to see Cognos ending up with the same fate as Watson !

There are methods of forecasting that use moving average and standard deviation functions to forecast future periods based on historical activity. Cognos has statistical functions that support this technique.

It is a bit complicated but you can search for information on the technique to see if you want to pursue it.

EDIT: I just noticed this is posted in Dashboards. The technique I am describing could be done in a report, not a dashboard.

I think this latest change works to strengthen the place Cognos Analytics has within IBM. It always seemed a little strange to me that they would have two offerings for what should really be one BI tool. This latest change fixes that, and Cognos Analytics is now the one and only IBM tool for descriptive and diagnostic analytics. :)

Just my opinion, of course...

I'm with MFGF. Forecasting is an essential part of advanced analytics, and something some competitors offer as part of the package. This move is a Good Thing(tm).

HelloCognos

Yes, good point MFGF, I'm dealing with some of that right now and certainly was trying to see if there is quick way (At least) to show forecasting and projection but the closest one in Reports is using moving-totals to project and show it on a graph. Thanks everyone. Cognos Analytics product needs to be as a part of the overall Cognos and not a separate licensing.....
