file picklist prompt

I finally was able to have the file picklist set up in my environment, but its not very user friendly. Is any one here familiar with what I am talking about?

Basically, I need some documentation that I can give to my users that will give them a "step by step" so that they can add the script to their reports.

(file picklist allows users to upload a .csv file to populate their prompt, instead of using data items)

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Fry?

Thanks.

Hi,

Fry?  So nice of you to ask!  :)

Could you clarify that you are using Cognos 8 Report Studio - the term "file picklist" is generally used for Cognos Impromptu.

Assuming you are using Report Studio, I'm guessing that your CSV file has been added as a data source and is appearing as a query subject in your package?  If this is the case, creating a prompt using the values should really be no different than if the values were stored in your database.  Or do you have some other sneaky method of doing this involving weird javascript or SDK code?

Intrigued,

MF.

Fry...
Yes.. I am being sneaky. It took a lot of work getting it to work with IIS but I have it functioning now. I am attaching the steps used to create this "Impromptu" like function.

Smith...

I see what you're doing here, but it seems an odd way of achieving this functionality.  A normal value prompt showing database values retrieves these values by means of a query.  Wouldn't it be easier just to filter your prompt's query to retrieve only the items you are interested in?

The thing is that we have set lists of customer numbers that are on a "do not invite list". Its not defined in the database, so this is easier. Capese?

Has anyone else had any experience in making this work? I see that this post is a little dated. I have a similar problem with a large group of users. We are in the process of upgrading now and the users are converting reports and many of them need to use picklists in Cognos 8.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
