hi,

first of all I request you all to kindly excuse me for asking the often repeated questions regarding the installation of Cognos8...

i am practically new to BI and had just finished DHW training on Cognos8, Informatica, BO, Oracle10g, SQL 2005 etc.,

However, I am greatly attracted to cognos and would like to build my career on cognos tools...

I am trying to install cognos (suite) on my system that has both window xp and windows 2003 server running... though I tried installing it several times I am not able to open Cognos Connection webpage (to use report studio, query studio etc.,)

But I am able to work on Data Manager and Framework Manager...

Is there any particular order in which the tools are to be installed? and since my O/S is windows, should I opt for cognos.cgi or cognosisapi.dll in the configuration ? what are the other changes to be made in IIS?

It would be very very helpful if you can kindly guide me regarding this issue

regards,
mohan

Hi,

Did you configure your web server aliases in IIS?  It shouldn't really make any difference which order you install components in, but historically I have always tended to install the C8 BI Server software first, then add FM/DM afterwards.

MF.

Dear MF,
Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, I followed the installation guide and configured IIS, .NET, ASP, COM+.
I created the virtual directory "Cognos8" under the Default Web Sites and then created the following virtual directories : cgi-bin, controllerbin, controller, controllerserver, controllerhelp.
Then for Reportnet I created the virtual directory "crn" under the Default Web Sites and cgi-bin and help within that...

after everything is done when I try to open the browser the Cognos Screen flashes for a few seconds and the error message "service unavailable" is displayed...

i tried all options as per the guide but unable to solve this problem... your help will be very much appreciated...

regards
Mohan

Did you configure and start the Cognos Service?

Hi friend,

Have you installed Cognos8 with XP or W2k3? If you installed with W2K3, you need to allow some items in IIS/Web Extensions, like run CGI, ISAPI and ASP. Try to do this and let us know about it.

Renata

Hi,

This may be a stupid question - why have you installed both Cognos 8 and ReportNet (crn)?  Did you configure them to use separate port numbers? By default they will both be configured to use port 9300 for the URIs, 9399 for the shutdown port and 9362 for the logging port, and of course C8 and CRN cannot both be using the same ports at the same time.

You might also find more information about what's wrong with your install(s) if you look at cogserver.log (for cognos 8) and crnserver.log (for reportnet).

Regards,

MF.

Hi,

thanks for the reply... as i mentioned earlier, I am learning cognos8... that is the reason i installed both on my windows 2003 server... and the log files are empty....

pls advice

Hi,

In that case, you need to go into the cognos configuration utility for either Cognos 8 or ReportNet and change the port numbers for one or the other.  Whichever you decide to change, make sure you change all URIs in the Environment folder from 9300 to something different (9301 is probably good), make sure to change the shutdown port number of the service from 9399 (to 9398 maybe?) and the logging port in the logging folder needs to be changed from 9362 (perhaps to 9363).

Once you have done this, save your changes and try to start the service.

The other thing to watch out for is that Cognos 8 and ReportNet require different content store databases - make sure you do not try to use the same one for both.

MF.
