Is a standard Cognos Express 10.2.2 installation licensed for Event Studio and Analysis Studio?  Both modules are available via the Launch drop down, and we can open them, but do not want to use if we aren't licensed to.  Any info or direction is much appreciated.

Thanks,
D

I received the following info from one of our Senturus contacts:

Yes, you should have full Cognos BI capabilities (tools) in Cognos Express, just limited number of users. It is true that Event Studio and Analysis Studio will still be available in Cognos Analytics v11, but they will be accessed through a separate tab (maintaining the older interface) and are on officially on their way out.

In fact, IBM sent out a deprecation notice on the older Cognos Studios in 2014, but has since published a revised statement indicating that they've made accommodations for users to access the older studios in Cognos 11 (for now)– see links below.

·       The original deprecation notice was on Oct 7, 2014 (see link and screen shot below)

http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?infotype=AN&subtype=CA&htmlfid=897/ENUS214-422&appname=USN

·       Since then, IBM explained that the older Studios will be supported in Cognos Analytics v11 "in a different way" (i.e., separate tab with older/different interface) (see IBM link below).

Hi

A standard Express 10.2.2 installation with the Express BI Connector, Express Administrator User and Express BI User licenses? Or are you referring to the Express Performance Management connector and users?

Assuming BI, the Express 10.2.2 license documents do not allow BI users to use Analysis Studio, but do permit use of Event Studio. Express Consumer users cannot use either.

Express 10.2.2 uses the same installer as Cognos BI 10.2.2, and there are several capabilities that exist in the software which Express users are not permitted to use. Analysis Studio is just one of them. For a complete list, take a look at the Express 10.2.2 license document below (look in the Prohibited Components section)

This is absolutely, categorically wrong. It sounds like your contact has misunderstood and is describing Cognos Analytics (ie Cognos 11) rather than Cognos Express. Cognos Express is currently version 10.2.2.

Again, this is relevant to Cognos Analytics (Cognos 11), but *not* relevant to Cognos Express currently.

Hi all. I was having a look at these license restrictions, and struggling to understand the license, especially the prohibited section. From the license document
http://www-03.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf/lilookup/217650585D0D34CF85257E4C001F1B6F?OpenDocument

1 - Cube Designer is a Supported Program, but not Dynamic cubes? Odd...

2 - Event Studio is not part of the Supported Programs list. But it's listed under the prohibited section for certain user types. Why not for all user types in that case?

3 - Similarly with Framework Manager. It's in the Supported list, but seems like it can only be used by Express Administrators? Is that right?

Sorry, just trying to understand how this license doc is put together.

Thanks
J

Here's my understanding:

1. Dynamic Cubes are not permitted in Cognos Express. It's strange that Cube Designer is listed as a supporting program. This effectively means you can install it. However, you're not allowed to use it in any of the license roles, so there's no point installing it.
2. Event Studio isn't a supporting program that can be installed separately - it's part of the core BI install. The only license roles not permitted to use it are IBM Cognos Express Performance Management User and IBM Cognos Express Consumer User.
3. Framework Manager is a supporting program - ie it can be installed for use with the core Express BI / TM1 installs, but isn't installed by default with either of these. The only license role permitted to use it is IBM Cognos Express Administrator.

Hi,

- IBM Cognos Express Performance Management User  --> excludes Analysis and Query Studio
- IBM Cognos Express Business Intelligence User  -->  excludes Analysis and Query Studio
- IBM Cognos Express User  -->  does not exclude Analysis or Query Studio

Does IBM Cognos Express User include Analysis Studio?

Btw: How do you administer all these capabilities in Cognos Administration? All manually, not using the predefined capabilities/roles?

Cheers, Markus

That does seem to be the case, yes :) The license docs don't prohibit it. I'd check with your IBM Account Manager just to be sure, though.

You can either adapt the predefined roles, or create your own - whichever you find easiest :)
