Cognos 10.2.2
In IE 11, when trying to access permissions tab for any such as a folder, report, adhoc report etc., a pop-up window appears with "Undefined" message. Closing this window does not show the permissions interface. This happens only in IE-11 non-compatibility mode. doesn't happen in Firefox or Chrome.

I have not looked it up just now, but I am 98% certain IE11 is only supported in compatibility mode for 10.2.2.

Bdbits nailed it - you must use compatibility mode in IE11.

thank you folks. Just wondering if there is a technical article from ibm with respect to this issue? I have checked the 10.2.2 FP list, but i don't see the exact issue with respect to compatibility mode off. Is there any other way like changing the CSS or javascript files to fix this issue?
Thanks in advance...

At the risk of sounding pedantic I'd suggest that it is not an issue. It is an aspect of the supported software environment.

You can go to the 10.2.2 supported environments page, select the software link and then take a look at web browsers, found in the supported software tab. There is a wealth of information there about various browsers.

As Lynn says - it's not an issue. The plain fact of the matter is that IBM only supports IE11 in compatibility mode for Cognos 10.2.2. It's not a bug you can work around. It might be as a result of IBM using quirks mode HTML (or maybe not), but the simple and only solution if you want to use IE11 is to switch on compatibility mode.

The supported environments page Lynn links to above details that IE11 is only supported in compatibility mode, so logging a PMR with IBM to ask for a fix isn't going to get you anywhere with this.

Cheers!

Out of curiosity, I just checked this for v11 (newest version). Interestingly, for the current release compatibility mode is only required for legacy components - Analysis, Event, and Query studios. However, it does seem to indicate that even these will eventually be supported in native mode in a future fix pack. Whether they plan to backport that to 10.x I did not check, if they even say. I would have my doubts, but you never know.

For what it's worth, when I first started with Cognos on 8.3 it was much more restrictive. As I recall, only IE and a specific version of Firefox were supported. Thankfully they are increasingly browser agnostic. In pre-release v11 presentations from IBM staffers, I recall they have a goal to only require HTML5 compliance, with no browser or device dependencies. So should only get better.

Hi Bob,

For the new release, IBM has moved away from using Quirks Mode HTML - in the new components. The legacy components still use this, though - and I believe it's this that drives whether you need to use Compatibility Mode in IE.

I managed to dig out this little gem for Cognos Analytics (11):

QuoteMany user interfaces all use standard HTML including but not limited to: portal, html reports and viewers, authoring, dashboards, web based modeling and Cognos Workspace, Dynamic Cube Builder.
Reports, which use quirks HTML in IBM Cognos BI v10, now use standard HTML. Because of this change, there may be fine differences in item sizes. These will have no impact on the vast majority of reports but some small number, such as reports printed on forms, may need small tweaks.
Some older user interfaces continue to use Quirks mode HTML including but not limited to: Query Studio, Analysis Studio, PowerPlay, Event Studio.

Cheers!

Ah that would explain it. I am a longtime advocate of browser agnosticism for HTML authors, so glad to see that IBM is well along that path. Write once, run anywhere - that's usually my goal.  8)
