Welcome to the new Cognos Analytics boards on Cognoise. The Cognos Analytics release introduces a number big changes and new innovations, and we have created a set of boards to fit around the new UI changes and capabilities.

Content Explorer is effectively the replacement for Cognos Connection. In this initial GA release of Cognos Analytics, it doesn't entirely cover the capabilities you'd find in Cognos Connection in Cognos 10.2.2, but most of them are included. In a couple of places you still end up in the old Cognos Connection UI when choosing features not yet included in Content Explorer, but this usually opens in a new browser tab so it's easy to maintain your place. Content Explorer is designed to be more intuitive and less cluttered than Cognos Connection. Options are only visible when they are appropriate - some from the three dots button alongside an item, and some via the More / Properties / Personal Menu buttons in the top right corner. We encourage you to explore the new UI and get used to the simpler layout and sliding panes.

Do you know of any plans to "migrate" the old dashboards from cognos connection to the new ui?

I doubt it though as from what i can see the new ui is more ui and probably written from scratch.

Hi,

What do you mean by "old dashboards"? Portal pages? Cognos Analytics does not support the creation of new portal pages. Upgraded Portal Pages can be maintained through Cognos Connection but IBM don't encourage this. Portal pages upgraded from a previous release will appear in the folder in which they resided in Cognos 10 BI. Portal pages/tabs will open in a new web browser tab with the Cognos 10 BI look and feel. There is no facility to set a portal page/tab as Home. There is no migration to take a portal page and automatically convert it to a Cognos Analytics dashboard.

Cheers!

Hi EarthDog,

There is no much issues in migrating Cognos old content to Cognos 11 IBM is still continuing its old functionalities along with new features .

For Eg: You will not get report studio and Work space advanced separately they created one single interface by merging RS and Work space advanced functionalities. You still have all the features which is there in old RS and Work space advanced.

If you would have created created your dash boards using either with Report studio or Work space advanced you can you migrate(Upgrade) them to Cognos 11 and use them with out any issues.

But remember Cognos 11 does not support Portal pages if you have created any dashboard layout using portal page you will be not able to make it as portal in Cognos 11  you should use it as content in your public or my folder.

I see.

This would be a nice but rather big change management for my users since now they use exclusively portal pages.

So there is a long way to C11

Thanks

Earthdog: What do your users have on their portal pages? Reports? Links to their content? Or something else?

A lot of my customers use the old cognos navigator portlet to provide folder links to reports... anyone know of a way to replicate that sort of functionality in CA ?

The new search capabilities make it easy to find content quickly, plus the fold-out navigation panes you get when you browse content also make it easy to navigate to the desired location. Is there something you did in a navigator portlet that you're missing in the new user interface in CA?

Cheers!

Good point on the new search...a saved search on a folder should do the trick !.
Now... Is there a way for an administrator to provide a saved search link to a folder for let's say 500 users ?

Not that I'm aware of. I'm pretty sure saved searches are personal to each user.

Hi,

If you're building new content, then this is the wrong strategy to pursue at this point. Cognos Connection, along with portal pages etc will be removed from the product in a future release - IBM have made this very clear. It's not a good idea to create new content using a technology that will soon disappear. Why do you need to create portal pages? What is the use case you are trying to address? There are probably much better ways of achieving it than using portal pages...

We're seeing a lot of "push back" on deprecating Portal Page and Cognos Connection related functionality and behavior as a barrier to moving to IBM Cognos Analytics 11

With IBM Cognos Analytics 11.0.5 there is a way to provide equivalent functionality that IBM Cognos Admins/Developers should have a look at:
