hi,

welcome to cognoise!

the reports that you save get saved in the content store database, though you can get a copy of XML of the report to your local machine and modify it, but it would be better to open the report in report studio and then modify the report.

lahdeb

Thank you for your replay
If i have an XML version of the report there is no way to open it via reportstudio ?
what i mean is that i could have a version of the report like the version that i had under Reportstudio , i know that'is impossible to open report studio without passing by the portal but , i m asking if there is a way to export the report (or all the package with it s reports) so i could reuse and modify them later .
exempl : for other softwer qlikview we can have a report format .qvw, or Business object format .rep , i don't know if there is a similitude with cognos
Best regards

Why would you want to do this? Saving a report "normally" stores the XML definition in the Cognos content store database, where it's safe and secure. You can open it any time you are connected to Cognos. Why would you want reports saved on local machines where they could potentially get out of step and/or corrupted or lost if the local machine has a disk problem? Isn't it a security risk too?

The answer is you can keep the XML locally if you really must - you can go to Tools > Copy Report to clipboard in Report Studio, then save the copied XML to a local file. Later on you can copy the XML back to your clipboard, start Report Studio, and go to Tools > Open Report from clipboard. Why would you, though? What benefit does having the XML locally give you?

thank you MFGF ,
well actualy i'm connecting to cognos via vpn , the problem is that the machine on the vpn is not stabl , so i want to save my reports into my local workspace then i could reuse the report even if my machine on the vpn is not running any more , this is the main purpose for my request .
the problem is that i don't know anyway to save reports (i mean by reports , the squelett of the report i.e so i could reuse this squelet and redesign my report under report studio with an other cognos installation)
but i didn't realy anderstand the meaning of saving report as xml format? i don't think that i could remodify it ? it is just an out of the original report (squelet) after execution , i don't want the out i want the conception of my report..or am i wrong? did you mean that i can have the conception of  reports from the contentstore?
thank you so much , but i tried manytimes to save reports , modify the folder's destination from the administrarion , but all what i have are OUTS of reports (reports after executions (pdf, xml))
best regards

The report specification is stored as XML in the content store which is not the same thing at all as the report output rendered in XML format.

The steps that the muppet provided explain how to get the report XML, save it where ever you like, and then re-open in report studio for further modification.

I have no idea what you are referring to when you say "squelet" (something pertaining to SQL perhaps?). The XML for the report will have all the elements that Report Studio needs to know about including the package, the queries, the layout, etc.

As you are new to Cognos you will benefit greatly from professional training and reading available documentation. These can help you get over the initial hurdles you face when starting with a new product.

I suspect that lahdeb is a native French speaker, in which case (s)he is referring to the bare bones or the basic structure of the report. But there are many other things which aren't clear.

@ lahdeb
Si tu es francophone, je veux bien t'expliquer par Cognoise PM les différents formats et leurs possibilités

I now return you to your normal program

Merci bcp

I suspect very few people on this forum can understand your message. I think Michael was inviting you to explain to him in French using the Personal Message system of the forum - ie the "My Messages" link at the top of the page. Posting in a thread in any language other than English isn't going to do you any good at all, sadly, as other people won't understand and be able to reply.

Indeed, it was my intention to take this exchange off the public forum. But as I encountered problems with contacting lahdeb by PM, I sent you (MF) a PM, asking for advice.

However, I do appreciate that you have other things to do during your working day than sorting out little problems like this   ;)

Ah - just saw your messages. You have two options for contacting lahdeb privately - either wait until they have enough posts to be able to use the messaging system, or (if they agree to it) I can send you the email address they registered with.

Cheers!

Yes, sorry for the double PM, but my browser froze... The board software seems pretty robust however, and also took my first PM, which I believed hadn't got through...

@ lahdeb
Si tu es d'accord que je te contactes par email pour donner suite à ta question, merci de poster une courte réponse ici en indiquant ton accord. Mais ne donne surtout pas ton adresse email ici!! Ton seul accord suffit, et le modérateur fera le reste.

I feel that a basic explanation of how Cognos metadata is stored and used would be useful here, and am willing to help lahdeb get up to speed in his/her native language </blush>  But I want to avoid turning Cognoise into a Tower of Babel  :)

lahdeb

hello ,
i have no problem if you want to replay to my requests with private message , i m grateful for your help , just one think , my problem is solved by using the xml format, and i want to clarify that i'm just a reports developper so i don't have much knowledge about cognos security and configuration that's why i'm posting such questions .

Hi,

Michael can't send you a personal message until your post count on Cognoise is higher. I can send him your email address privately if you agree to it - then he can email you? Is this something you'd like me to do?

Best regards,

MF.

Yep - thanks! Now you have enough posts to be able to send and receive PMs you and Michael can discuss things in French (or Belgian or Canadian or...) :)

Yeah, and thanks to a Teach Yourself course, which for some reason I had a lot of trouble finding, I'll soon be fluent in Swiss  ;)
