Hi all,

I am somewhat new to Cognos 10 so bear with me if this has been asked before.  How do I add and connect a new data source after I already set up a blank New Project and went all the way through the Wizard?  I've tried to add a new Data Source but it just makes a blank one and I don't see where to add or edit the connection?  sorry if this is an easier question.

Hi,

If you right-click on a namespace and choose the "Run metadata wizard" option, it takes you to a dialog where you choose what type of metadata source to import from. Make sure "Data Sources" is selected, and press Next.

The next screen shows you a list of all the data sources your Cognos server knows about currently. If the data source you need is in the list, simply select it and choose Next again. If it's not in the list, there is a "New" button on the right that you can press to set up a new data source on the Cognos server. Once you complete this, the new data source will be in the list and you can choose it and press Next.

Cheers!

What happens if I haven't created a name space yet in the project?

You can't have a project without a namespace. If you look in the model tree on the left, a default empty project will have the model at the very top (named the same as the model cpf file you save) and underneath it is a top-level namespace called "Model".

You can rename the "Model" namespace to another name, you can add other namespaces below it, but you can't delete it. You *must* have at least one namespace in a project.

Cheers!

oh I understand now.  When I started my project it just named the model after the data source that I started with.  I see it all now.   I've only been doing Cognos about a month or so, and so all the names like model and namespace are a bit confusing yet.  thanks for the help.
