Is there a character limit for data items?

I created a data item that concatenates several other data items.  However, every time I run the report, it crashes.  I've tried splitting it b/t 2 data items but then the data items don't line up properly.  It's the oddest thing.  Everything runs fine in list view.

Any ideas?
