Report Studio and Cognos Workspace Advanced

Hi Experts,

Question regarding Licensing.

At present, My client is having two types of licenses for Cognos  like Professional and Express authoring modes. Can you please tell me what is the difference in switching between professional and express in Reports Studio.?  I have searched in internet, it seems both are same. I do not find any differences.

Now we are upgrading Cognos from 8.4 to 10.2.1, I observe there is no Authoring mode in Report Studio, And I understand that IBM has introduced new Workspace Advanced, Can you please tell me what is IBM Cognos Workspace Advanced is used for.? Is there any relation to Authoring mode in 8.4? Do Client needs to purchase any licence to use it.?

Cognos Workspace Advanced is a unified report authoring environment intended for business users. It can effectively replace Query Studio and Analysis Studio allowing users to produce reports against both relational and dimensional sources. I'm sure there are better blurb descriptions out there if you look.

The best information on licensing is going to come from your IBM representative, so I suggest you have the client contact them to ensure the right information is provided.

In Cognos 8, there were two authoring "skins" for Report Studio - Professional gave you full capabilities and Express was specifically for authoring financial reports. A Professional license gave you the option to use both skins as desired (plus Query Studio and Analysis Studio), and an Advanced Business Author license gave you the option to use only the Express skin. You also had Query Studio for authoring list/crosstab reports and Analysis Studio for doing dimensional analysis. These required a Business User license and a Business Analyst license. To use all three (Express mode in RS, Query Studio and Analysis Studio) required you to have all three licenses.

In Cognos 10, the Express Authoring mode of Report Studio morphed into Cognos Workspace Advanced. It is still a re-skin of Report Studio, but it allows users to write financial reports (just like Express mode) plus list/crosstab reports (very much like Query Studio) plus do dimensional analysis (very much like Analysis Studio). The big change is that all of this functionality comes under the one Advanced Business Author license. If you are migrating from 8 to 10 with an Advanced Business Author license you suddenly get a huge hike in the capabilites available to you.
