Hi Naga,

sounds like you gave a good answer.

I suppose I might have interpreted a question like that in a couple of ways, either they could have wanted you to talk about specifically about Routing Sets, and the ability in Cognos 8 and above to associate roles/groups/packages/users with certain dispatchers in an environment.  Or they might have been after an explanation of the way in which the Content Manager in an environment manages the requests coming in and allocates them to report and batch report services for answering the requests.  Or maybe even something else outside of Cognos like web load balancing?

In my opinion, your best bet in an interview situation is probably to (politely!) ask for a little clarity on the question if you feel it's too vague or open to interpretation, or perhaps  better yet - talk about all the elements that you think might answer the question - if nothing else you can demonstrate your depth of knowledge on the product.  Maybe a question back like:

"I'm sorry, just so I'm clear are you asking me to give you some detail on the usage of Routing sets, or would you like me to talk about the way in which a Content Manager manages incoming requests in a Cognos environment?"

The implication to your interviewer being you are confident to talk about both!  ;)

Good luck with the interview result!

Simon

ps. for the record - here's what IBM have to say re: cognos load balance:

I would certainly have explained the role of the dispatcher(s) within the architecture, which load balance requests between the available report services on a single server, and between other dispatchers within the architecture in a multi server environment using a weighted round robin approach. I would also have mentioned the dispatcher weighting you can apply to each dispatcher to influence this. As Simon suggested, you might have mentioned routing rules too, which override the inbuilt load balancing. Or you can switch off the load balancing between dispatchers by setting them to 'cluster compatible' and use an external load balancing mechanism instead.

Just the ramblings of a muppet :)
