Cognos 8 Report Validate Question

We just upgraded from Reportnet 7 to 8 and have encountered an interesting problem.  Now when we validate a report specification in Cognos 8 a prompt window opens asking us to input parameters to the report.  If we do and proceed, it spins and never finishes.  So to date we have been unable to validate reports in 8 other than if we don't get an error and get a prompt box we assume the report is valid.

I went into a report to debug it and wanted to view the generated sql and got the same prompt box.  So I cannot even view the sql.

Has anyone else run into this condition?  Or is this how Cognos 8 is supposed to work?

Thanks

Brian

It seems to be a reported bug in Cognos8!!!

Ajith... please provide some information about your reply... Where can we find some additional information about this so called "bug"? Don't start shouting "bug" without some prove...

If you are receiving this "542175 - PCA-ERR-0062  The "cn" node is not expected to be a "value"." We have a case open since Cognos Support says "Currently there are no known workarounds for this issue." and it is a product defect.

Did this query run before going to Cognos 8?  ReportStudio won't let you see the query until it returns data.  If the query isn't quite right (we are developing so this sort of thing happens in large database environments) this is a problem.

You didn't mention what database you're using, but many databases allow you to see queries in flight.

Meanwhile beg for the option to Show Generated Query without Executing It.  I would love to have that check box appear in the lower right area of the dialog box.  I didn't get it for Christmas, but the Easter Bunny is just around the corner.... ;D

I got the same error and as a curious tip if you generates the SQL/MDX from any of your queries and after that you try to validate it works perfectly.   ???

Hi Tosty,

If I generate SQL then validate it seems to work correctly.  At least on the surface.  I then save the report thinking that everything is fine.  But when I re-open the report and try to validate I get the same original condition, until I generate sql again.  Only then can I validate the report.  My gut feeling is telling me its some kind of bug from Cognos.  Because even with a very simple report as a test I still get that condition.  Since we moved over from Cognos 7 we have been unable to validate our reports. I can't see, so far,  anything that we are doing to cause this condition.

Thanks

Brian
