Hi Friends,

I am novice to congnos. But due to new project requirement has to learn congos but i don't know from where to start as it is having many options Report stuiod, Query Studio, Event and connection. I am confused can you help me to create some reports and get clear idea about cognos and modeling?

Lynn

I recommend the training courses that Cognos offers as an excellent way to learn the tools along with best practices.

The classes are not inexpensive, but they do offer a tremendous value in my opinion. I am an independent consultant so I pay for training out of my own pocket and give up billable hours to attend.....and I find it very worthwhile.

If you visit the Cognos Customer Center (http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/cognos/customercenter/) you can find a lot of information about the products. It is a very comprehensive suite of products and the role you would like to fulfill has a lot to do with how you approach your learning.

I suggest you review the section on "Cognos Training Paths" in the "Services/Training" tab. You can look at the various roles and read about what tools are covered in the various classes as well as understand pre-requisite skills you might require. This will help focus your learning activities even if attending classes is not an option for you.

Best of luck.

Hey Thanks Lynn for your valuable reply.

But i don't know from where to start. There are many tools COGNOS 8 Administration, COGNOS Connection, Framework Manager, Report Studio, Query Studio, Analysis Studio, Event Studio, Metrics Studio, SDK and many more, i have lot of confusion regarding this do i need to learn everything to develop reports if yes then what is their specific uses?

Can i install this report studio on my machine (demo or trial is also fine) one demo version i found on IBM site but not able to login even providing correct login credentials.

Your help is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Raj

If you look at the "Training Paths" I mentioned in my earlier post you can figure out what role you'd like to learn about and from there identify which tools you need to learn.

You mention developing reports, so you might look at the Professional Author role as a place to begin:
http://www-304.ibm.com/jct03001c/services/learning/ites.wss/us/en?pageType=page&c=Q563510K50241Y53

I avoid doing installs as much as humanly possible so I can't help beyond saying "yes" - it can be installed on your machine. Perhaps look at the Administration board on the forum to find out more about installation.

Hi Lynn,

Thanks again.

I searched Training Path and i found

http://www-03.ibm.com/services/learning/ites.wss/us/en?pageType=page&c=S387217V08792O68

Developer Role, to develop new reports in cognos. As per that chart it seems that i need to learn SDK but along with that there are many other options like framework manager and OLAP etc.... What are they for?

I gone through the link you provided for "Professional Author Role" is it something different than Developer role? I want to re-design some old reports and also develop some new reports for a client? Still i am confuse?

Regarding installation of IBM BI on machine, i am trying to download it from IBM official site which is available for 30 days trial to get myself educated :). I hope it is allowed.

Hi,

I managed to install Report Studio and i published sales_pkg, when i create sample report using this package i am getting below error,

An error occurred while performing operation 'sqlOpenResult' status='-28'.
(UDA-SQL-0114 The cursor supplied to the operation "sqlOpenResult" is inactive.UDA-SQL-0564 [Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type int.)

But i have selected only one field (Country code), still getting same error. The respective table is having only 10-15 records.

How did you define the data source that points your Cognos install at your SQL Server database?  Did you follow the steps in the Installation and Configuration guide?  I assume that if you downloaded a 30-day trial, this is Cognos Express?

MF.
Meep!

HI MF,

Yes, i downloaded it from official IBM site for 30 days trial.
I followed same steps from the configuration pdf which i got with installation.
