I'm having difficulties installing Cognos 8.4 on Windows 2003 x64 server, earlier we had it running just fine on Windows 2003 SP1 server.

Please advise.

Advice you on what ?

64 bit installation can go smooth and can become hairy. It all depends. I have had problems with 64 bit on Win 2008 because of IIS, don't remember the version but it was newer than IIS 6 which had different ways of configuring. On Win XP, it went pretty smooth. By the way, 64 bit is slower than 32 bit (my experience). If you are not using TM1, I would not advice to use 64 bit.

Sorry for just asking for advice without being specific. That is because I've never done any admin/install type of work with Cognos, just being a cognos newbie it was difficult for me to frame specific issues/questions.

Anyway, thanks for providing some valuable inputs. That is a start.

Can you also mention like the precautions that I need to be taking care of? Perhaps a checklist of things that will be required for an easy or manageable installation of Cognos 8.4 in Windows 2003 64-bit server.

Thanks again.

Try downloading some documentation from here
https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27015681

Also this forum has heaps of links to the IBM Cognos proven practices sites etc

Depending on your type of installation, which you should have scoped before starting, and based on the server/s spec's, you will need to consider the following
1.  Number of concurrent users that will hit any reports.
2.  Type of reports to be developed.  Report Studio, Analysis Studio, Query Studio etc
3.  Data sources used to source the data.  OLAP, or Relational, 32 or 64 bit and so on.
4.  Authentication source used to allow access to the Portal.  LDAP, ADS, NTLM, etc
5.  Who will be doing what and where with which software clients.

These are just a few of the questions that need to be considered before touching the software on a client site.
If you're only planning to install a server for playtime then, have a crack at installing and running the samples to familiarise yourself as the above question would be mute.

Thank you Peter B,

A developer's mind (such as mine) is laid back and does not think beyond their comfy developer's world (the environment should always be "ready to go"), it is pretty much like an assembly line.

Now I'm looking at the Installation and Configuration Guide I'm beginning to get something about setting the stage for the developer's world.

Thanks
