Cognos Server Sizing, the great mistery!

Hello again!
I've noticed that is quite difficult to find information about server sizing.
I mean, you don't know how much of cpu resources and network bandwidth you need for a respective amount of users.

The only thing i remember is something about rule of 1x10x100.

e.g.
for 100 users
10 will use significantly
1 is the heavy user

Any info will be very appreciated

Hi,

As this is more an art than it is a precise science and the variables for a given implementation are numerous it is difficult to size exactly.

The 1:100 rule can be used as a rough rule of thumb.  For example at any given time, for 1000 named users (potential users), there will be 100 users active on the system (signed on) and 10 of which will be concurrently running reports.  If you have a much smaller system then the concurrency rate is likely to be higher.

If you know your environment or potential environment well enough and the type of report (interactive or batch),number of reports and the peak and troughs of when reports will run then you can more accurately estimate the impact on your system in terms of resources.

Once you have a good idea of the utilisation then you can determine the report and batch processes needed, the number of cpu's and possible RAM requirements etc.  You need to also factor in how your system will scale outwards and upwards if need be i.e. can you add more memory/cpu to your server or will you add in additional servers.

In addition to performance and scalability you also need to factor in failover support and hence availability.

A good place to start is the Architecture and Deployment Guide.  This will give you a practical checklist of items to consider.

Good luck

Rob

RobsWalker! Many thanks :D

I got something yesterday, i hope this can be helpfull.
There is a pdf document from Cognos 7.4 named Planning Advanced Installations Guide. Inside you can read chapter 5: Capacity Planning, Server Sizing and Scalability.

Very handful  ;)

Hi,

You just need to be mindful that the Cognos 8/Cognos 10 architecture is very different from that of Series 7 (IWR, PPES etc).  As you have posted on a Cognos 10 board I guess you are looking to size that.

For sure, Rob! But i need ways to deal with it and this is a start/trigger at least.
Even Google can't find something usefull about Cognos sizing :p

Thank you again

Hi,

Have a look at the Architecture Guide link below.

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/cbi/v10r1m0/index.jsp

Follow the path:

1. Install ->
2. Business Intelligence Architecure and Deployment
3. Deployment ->
4. Performance Planning

Out of interest how many users do you expect to see on your system?

Hello Robs! Sorry my delay... at first thanks for you atention. You are a great person who really likes to help the other, this is quite rare...

im reading the performance planning right now and i´ll post my thoughs...  there will be 80 users.
20 "power users" and 60 consumers i guess.

See you!
