Windows 2k8 Firewall and Cognos

I am hitting a road block with Cognos and the Windows 2k8 firewall.

For SP2 I was able add an Inbound TCP rule for ports 9300 and 9362 and got it to work.
This apparently does not work with SP1.
I know it is the firewall because when I turn it off, it works.  When I turn it on, I can't start Cognos.

I am running Cognos Business Intel. 8.4.0 [edit].

Any advice?

Hi,

Sounds like this issue is specific to the firewall rather than the C8 instance.  If you look in Program files\cognos\c8\logs at the cogserver.log file, are any specific errors or timeouts reported where the service fails to start?

Sadly I don't know anything about Windows 2008 firewall configuration, but if we're lucky there may be a clue reported back in the cogserver.log file that could help an expert to pinpoint what needs changing in the firewall config.

Regards,

MF.

I was able to resolve this issue.

If you want Cognos to work behind a firewall you will need the TCP ports "9300, 9362, 9399" open.

My problem was that my SQL Server port was being blocked, 1433.  When I opened it up I was able to start Cognos.
Cognos gives a very non-descript error in this case... and is very difficult to track down.
Infact, Cognos Config will not give you verbose "details" unless you add an additional firewall rule un-blocking the config executable under Win 2k8.

Thanks for your help!
