You still have Transformer to design the cubes. You can, however, have the server build cubes now.

Cubes are also data sources in Framework Manager, thus integrated into the "CRN" stuff.

Can i know what you mean?

Please explain in more detail what your question is.  Cognos 8 BI has Analysis Services which replaces PowerPlay Web.  It DOESN'T have Transformer for building cubes.  However if you buy Cognos 8 BI with Analysis Services you will also get PowerPlay Transformer 7.3 so that you can build new cubes or maintain pre Cognos 8 BI cubes.

As has already been stated you can also build cubes in databases uses such tools as MS SQL Server Analysis Services and these can be viewed by Analysis Services.

ANY cube you want to use must be reference in Framework Manager as a data source and published as a Package before is can be seen in Cognos Connection.

I'm also interested in hearing the details of this...

My understanding is that (for now) one method is:

  • export IQD's from the FM model,
  • build the cube using the IQD's with Transformer 7.3, then
  • import the cube back into the FM model as a datasource where you can then publish it out to Cognos Connection.

Anyone know if there will be a Transformer v8 or equally capable tool released in future for the Cognos 8 BI suite?

There are several ways to access cubes now.
You can just make a datasource to your MS analysis cube or powercubes or
you can even transform your relational databases to a DMR in Framework Manager now.

Mike is right, you export the IQD from Framework Manager and use that in Transformer.

I actually think and hope that they'll build more of the transformer functions into framework manager.
It isn't going to be a big step to combine the two applications completely.

The next maintenance release of C8 is due in the 2-3 months and apparently includes the long-awaited "Transformer 8".
