Scripting Job and Report status

Looking to see if it is possible to write a script outside of SDK that will check and follow the status of a triggered job.  I have a VB script that will query the audit database, but entries into the audit db can sometimes take some time.  Is there a  better way?  I should probably query the Content Store database directly, but not sure the best approach.
