Client performance lag when editing report

Hi all,

I have an odd situation I was hoping the community may have seen and have pointers on.  My workplace is using Cognos 10.2.1 FP 9 currently (planning to migrate to 10.2.2 latest FP soon).  Our installation is a single server distribution currently and hosted on a Red Hat Linux server with our content store on a Oracle database hosted on a separate box.

We have a report author experiencing noticeable slowness when opening and editing reports in Report Studio on their computer.  The user is using Internet Explorer and Windows 7.  They've indicated that occasionally when opening a report in Report Studio the process will time out and they will receive an error from Report Studio telling them the web request failed.  Also, when editing content in Report Studio (i.e. adding an additional column of data to a list report or editing a label for a column in a list report) the request can take several seconds longer than normal to complete.

I suspect the issue is related to the client's computer, but I'm not sure what specifications could affect the performance they're seeing with Report Studio and have not been able to find any missing settings or specifications from IBM.  Originally, the user was using a VPN and wireless connection.  We have since tested both with and without the VPN and have used a more stable wired connection, but still find the additional slowness on the user's computer when editing reports in report studio.

The issue does appear to be affected by the complexity of the report being edited.  Performing a simple action like updating a label for a column of data in a simple report is pretty instantaneous.  Performing it in a more complex report takes longer.

I've tested three PCs with different hardware specifications and Operating Systems (Windows 7 vs Windows 10) but haven't been able to find a consistent behavior.  If I open one of the complex reports the user is noticing slowness with, the amount of time it takes to update a label for a column of data in the report varies on each computer I use, but continues to be slower on the user's computer.

Looking at things from the database side for the Content Source and from the server side for Cognos is not showing any issues.

Would anyone have seen similar behavior before and have any suggestions on what factors from the client side (aka a user's computer) could affect the speed of actions when loading and editing reports in Report Studio for 10.2.1?

As always thanks for any helpful advice the community can provide.  Always appreciated!

If I understand you correctly
* the user experiences the problem regardless of the PC being used, even if in a different location (to eliminate the network)
* if another user logs on to the problem user's PC, they do not experience the problem

Odd indeed.

I assume you've cleared cookies and cache. If not, try that.

Can you try a different browser (if you have a choice)? Does it make a difference? If so I'd try to reset their browser settings/profile on the 'normal' browser.

I might run a network trace, but it will be very tedious to wade through all the packet-level data.

You could try creating a new Windows user profile. Annoying because you will have to move any locally stored things between profiles, and they will probably lose some configuration details along the way. But it might solve the problem.

If you're really desperate you could try a support ticket, but I suspect that is not really going to help much. It will be shrugged off as a "client problem".

I would also think of something in a roaming Windows profile.
