Hi,
Planning to migrate from Cognos ReportNet1.1 MR4 on Solaris 10 to Cognos 8.4 on Windows NT2000 -

Q1) Do we need to rewrite the entire framework and report?
Q2) Application server (Weblogic 8.1 sp6): Can we have the same on Windows environment too?
Q3) We use custom Java authentication in current environment. Can we use the same in Windows too?
Q4) We use certain SDK code to trigger reports automatically in CRN. Can the same SDK code be used on Windows environment also?
Q5) Web server would remain on Solaris 10 - Will this make any difference or cause any problem?

Is there any high-level documentation available to do this?

Thanks,
GPPande.

In response to questions 1 and 4.

1) it almost guaranteed that you'll have to upgrade/modify some of your reports either before or after the upgrade to 8.4. Do you have a test enviornment you can upgrade first and check which reports are affected. Some you'll have to fix after an upgrade, others you may be able to modify in such a way in ReportNet that they upgrade to 8.4 without any problems.

4) We also use SDK to trigger reports out of hours. The SDK code changed significantly from ReportNet to 8.x. Especially with regards to requesting reports. You'll defiantely have to upgrade your code to be suitably compliant.

It's a big step from ReportNet to 8.x. Take time to test everything. It's even bigger doing a operating system at the same time !!!!!  There is no documentation to do what you are talking about since everyones infrastructure is generally dedicated.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, as I read through various documentations I see it is a big effort.
Any idea if the framework upgrade happens automatically or it too needs extra efforts?

I came to know that we can export and import the entire content store without any trouble. But, models would have to be manually published. Am I right?

Thanks.

hello,

the webserver can remain on your solaris box, it should not be a problem. but if you IIS on your windows machine it would be lot more easier for all different perspectives

crn to c8 migration means a lot. there is difinitely a big overhead on all the stake holders.

yes, you can export the entire content store from reportnet and then import into 8.4 BI. you would need to validate every single report. there are 95% chances that every complex report would fail to validate automatically after migration. so you will also need to open your reportnet FM models in 8.4 BI FM to upgrade them, validate, repair and publish the packages. then once again validate your reports. most likely they should work. some cognos built-in functions like average have changed cognos 8 onwards. so you will have to replace all such functions in your reports to make them work in cognos 8.4 bi.

hope this helps to some extent.
