Which folder did this data come from?

I frequently have this issue, where I look at a report and need to know which folder in the catalog that a data item was taken from.

Is there a way to tell where the data was selected from?  I have researched on the internet and it appears that there are several tools for sale that will provide that data, but can it be done without purchasing a software tool?

Yes this can be done without purchasing any software. You have two options

Option 1) Follow a simple naming standard in the future for the folders and their contents.

For e.g. Folder 1
                Sub Folder 1.1
                        Item 1.1.1
                        Item 1.1.2

With this naming convention every field item acquires a unique name ensuring your tracability.

Option2 ) This is more difficult. Examine the SQL statement. Even if there are aliases used you can determine which alias and therefore which folder  a query item came from
