Concatenate not working?

I use custom groups against two separate columns and assign Yes and No values in each of the columns. I then use calculate/concatenate against the two custom group columns and just want to display the concatenation values of yes-no, yes-yes, no-yes, and no-no. The problem is that the output is not displaying properly in some cases. For example, one value might be Yes and the other No, so the concatenated output should be Yes-No but it is displaying No-No instead. I apply custom groups to the concatenated values to get another output and it is coming out incorrectly because of the wrong display. Can I use custom groups against concatenated columns which were already produced by custom groups?  I am getting pretty deep with functions against functions and am wondering if Query Studio is getting confused and producing the incorrect output.
