Hi,

What type of database are you connecting to? Do you have a DQM connection (JDBC) set up for it? What permissions does the user defined in the data source connection in Cognos 10 BI have to schemas in the database?

A DQM connection is one that uses JDBC to connect to the data source, rather than ODBC or OLE-DB (or SQL Server Native Client). When configuring a data source connection to SQL Server, there is an optional tap to configure the JDBC connectivity - this has to be done to be able to use the data source in Cube Designer.

What about the answers to my other question? What permissions does the user defined in the data source connection in Cognos 10 BI have to schemas in the database?

Cheers!

Hi,

When you say you have admin rights, do you mean your Cognos login is a member of the System Administrator role? If so, this isn't what I was referring to. When you set up a data source connection from Cognos BI to SQL Server, you specify a database user to connect to the database via a signon. Does the database user you have specified have permissions to see the schema within the database?

The option to import metadata from Framework Manager in Cube Designer was added as a new feature for the 10.2.2 release - what version are you using currently?

Cheers!

i have only read permission to the data source ,
here i am using 10.2.1 version so how can i use the framework manager dmr model in cognos cube designer?
for create the cube in cube designer the data warehouse should be in star or snowflake ?

Thanks

I think you should look carefully into this - are you sure you have enough privileges to see the schema?

You can't use Framework Manager metadata in Cube Designer in any release prior to 10.2.2. You need to upgrade to 10.2.2 to get this functionality.

Yes - that is IBM's recommendation :)

When you say "data source schema without any schemas." what exactly do you mean?
Do you mean, the list of data sources in the metadata import dialog is completely empty?
Do you mean, there's a list of the data sources which you have in your cognos connection portal but when you expand any of them nothing appears under the node?

Does the user /group/role that you're logged in as have the metadata import capability granted to it?
Are you sure that you're configured correctly to point to the portal that you set up the data source connection?

As for your other questions.

Yeah to succeed with dynamic cubes you need a data warehouse and a properly designed one at that, which usually is the case in serious shops. It's not just that.  You need serious hardware too.  When a cube is started up all the members of all the dimensions are loaded into memory.   One BIG reason you'd want to go to dynamic cubes is to take advantage of aggregate awareness.  One part of that is in-memory aggregates, which need, not surprisingly, memory.  As the query cache is populated (by people making queries and by priming queries) more memory is used.   IBM has a doc about hardware sizing estimation and a tool in cube designer to help you too.   The whole dynamic cube thing isn't a off-the-cuff sort of thing for someone; it's a serious investment of time, resources, and thought involving a multidisciplinary team possibly involving project managers and such like and presentations to the CIO and, possibly, presentations by the CIO justifying the investment.

There's a chapter on importing fm models.  You need to read it if you want to think about migrating your stuff to dynamic cubes.  It isn't for the beginner.
