Cognos Widgets Refresh Question

Hi,
I am new to Cognos Workspace, so maybe its a naive question.

The way I envision to use the COgnos Workspace to cater to my users' Dashboard needs :
1. Build the small widget like report pieces in Report studio. ( Say I build 4 reports)
2. Save a version of each of the reports by running them individually.
3. Pull them in a new Workspace using Cognos Workspace menu option.
4. Added a filter choosing a Vendor number as the common prompt.
4. Save the Workspace.

Question 1 :
- When I select a given Vendor, the widgets get refreshed and redraw for the selected vendor ( very cool). However, does Cognos engine actually fire these queries against the database, and retrive the data, or its just scanning through the save output report to get me the data ?
Question 2 :
However, now that I have created a copy of my original source reports, how do I get my Workspace to get refreshed with daily data, after my Reporting database gets refreshed at night ? I can schedule my 4 original reports ( created in step 1) to get run in the background, and have the latest copy saved. However, do the changes in data would automatically reflect in my workspace when I open up the workspace the next day ? I wish to have my users see fresh data when they open the dashboard the next day. How can we ensure that in Cognos Workspace environment ?

I think what I found after doing some quick POC. the reports are actually running against the database to fetch the data, and its not just fetching from the saved output.
For Active reports, the workspace is pulling the last saved output from the main report
