I need to place one text item below another.  I can only seem to place them next to each other. 

How to do this?

If you have two data items in a node and just want a new line, try inserting a 2-row, 1-column table in the node and put the data items in the table cells. You will probably need to unlock the report to do this.

Sorry for the novice question but what exactly do you mean by "node"?

It was probably not a good word choice, sorry for any confustion. I was just referring to a cell within a data container, for example an intersection in a crosstab. I was trying to avoid confusion with the word "table" and "table cell", since I was proposing you use that as a solution.
