roleValue in repeater

When I try using roleValue('_memberUniqueName', [Data Item]) I receive an error "...Query cannot be planned...". This is against 10.2.1 DMR DQM. And since its a repeater I cannot use a currentMember(hierarchy) option instead of [Data Item].

Is this a changed functionality with 10.2.1 DQM?

To add on,I am using the roleValue function inside of a report expression that has javascript in it to call a JS function and pass values as parameters.
