Hi all, is it possible to use a fact from from measure dimension with a column in model query subject? Or measure dimensions work only with regular dimensions?

I tried to use a fact from measure dimension (created from facts in fact table), with brand in model query subject, it gives me grand total of fact for all brands instead of individual values for each brand.

But if i create a single level regular dimension for brand.. It works perfectly fine....

Where do you test?  Testing within FM is often not the right place with dimensional models.  However your question is confusing.
A measure dimension contains measures referencing dataitems within a facttable or a model query subject that is based on a table/view
A Regular dimension contains 1 or more hierarchies containing levels. The levels are build up from keys/labels referincing dimension tables / query subjects based on dimension tables.
The dimension will need to have a relation with the fact. Cognos automatically generates a scope relationship for the measure dimension and the hierarchy in the regular dimension.
If you use this in a report/analysis package then the measure will give values in accord with the dimension values (members) For the All level you will naturally see the entire measure rolled up to 1 value. Seems you are looking at this..

I tested in FM and report studio both sides.
But if i use measure dimension with a regular dimension the result is correct.
If i use a fact from measure dimension with a column in query subject(not regular dimension), it returns grand total.

So my question... Does measure dimension work only for regular dimensions?or it should also work with normal query subjects that doesn't have any hierarchy.

Well, that is not the way it is is designed to work.
You either use a relational OR a dimensional model. If you check with best practice you will notice that you can use a seperate layer added to the relational one which will give you a DMR model. As I posted elsewhere a few weeks back it IS possible to pass dimensional prompt values to a relational model with some effort, but drawing dimensional and relational items in one query is not the idea..

In other words, there is no point in defining measure dimensions if you want to use relational items. You can then simply use the fact definitions (where the measure dimension is based upon)

Please use the FM documentation on how to add a dimensional layer and how to use it
