Display text in a crosstab

I'm new to Cognos and have a request.

Background - distribution system query shipping lane, batch, and then data about each store

Need to turn this into a crosstab so that the lanes are the columns, the batch are rows and then each intersection is a table.  The table would actually be the result of an html string expression.  I can write the expression.  Just don't know how I can get it into the crosstab intersection and display.

Already tried repeater table, which would have been perfect but I need the columns and rows to be controlled like a crosstab

Again, I'm a newbie.  Please be specific if providing instructions.  I have found several posts on the internet that tell you how to do this for a single field value, but none of the instructions are specific enough (to much ambiguity) to actually read and execute.
