conditional format images do not appear in email when send as html output

Hi, I have a report which has 3 images(gold,silver,bronze) in a list report column as per a conditional format. I use relative path(egs /images/gold.png). When I email the report as html the 3 images do not appear. Where as if I email the report as pdf the images do appear. The thing I noted that if I place the images outside the list report they appear correctly. Do you know why is this issue?
