I need to set a prompt on the report page itself and not on the prompt page. Is it mandatory to have it set to optional. If i have it as required I get prompted to choose a value even before i reach the report page

You can set a prompt on the report page, and no, it is not necessary for it to be mandatory.

Ensure that the prompt in your filter is set to 'Optional' in the Properties of Query Explorer, along with the Prompt Value (ie. Text Box/Value prompt).

I meant can i have the prompt as mandatory?

Also, on a different topic, what happens if i set the filter to optional int the query explorer  but have the prompt in the page explorer to required.

The setting that you define in the filter(optional, mandatory) overrides the setting on the prompt control. You can have the mandatory prompt on the report page (depends on your requirement).

Hi,

When you have a prompt on your report page and you dont want it to be prompted before the main page loads, the prompt should be optional. You need to set default value of the prompt using properties pane by clicking on the prompt. This default value is picked by the prompt when report runs first time. Though you can change this default value when main page loads.
