DMR, star schema groupings, and scope relationships

Hello all (first post),

I've inherited an "in development" FM model, in which we have a foundation (database and joins), consolidation (name changes, filters, calculations), analysis (for DMR measures/regular dimensions), and presentation layers for the relational and DMR data, with all of the relationships defined.

As I said, we're in development, i.e., new dimensions and meansures are being added to the database that needs to be flowed through to the presentation, which I've been doing.  However, I'm getting a warning "BMT-MD-6006 - Package contains orphan dimensions not in scope with other measure or regular dimensions", and it appears that new dimensions are not working properly with the existing measures.

My understanding is that FM creates scope relationships within DMR when you run the "Create Star Grouping" wizard on the dimensions and measures of your choice. I believe my issue is that I am attempting to "add" dimensions after the fact:  I'd assumed Cognos would use the underlying joins to build scope relationships, but that does not seem to be the case.

Is there any way to "manually" build a scope relationship between a new regular dimension and an existing set of measures?  I'm under the assumption that this is what is causing my issue (i.e., that the DMR model doesn't know what to do with the new regular dimensions, even though they're joined properly elsewhere in the model), and the only other way I can think of to resolve this would be to re-create the star schema grouping every time a new dimension is added (which seem like a lot of rework to me).

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks

Create star schema grouping is just a wizard!  It certainly does not influence scope relationships.
When you switch to  'dimension map'   (use right mouse --> Switch to view)  you will get overview of measure dimensions to the right side and regular dimension at the top.   This overview is empty when no dimensional objects exist in the given namespace.  If the namespace has only 1 of the 2 type of dimensional types you may have orphans, as no scope can be applied/determined.

With both types present you can  apply scope, delete scope and set the scope within a dimension with the icon just above the regular dimension list

blom0344:  Thank you!

I don't know what the mental block was, but I think I understand now, and I've managed to correct my issues:  I didn't realize you managed scope at the namespace through the dimension map, and was unsuccessfully trying to find a way to build them individually, instead of taking care of it at the "top" of the namespace.  First time dealing with DMR, and this has been a very helpful place for information.

Thanks again for the quick answer!
