hi our organization is new to cognos and i am a bit of everything right now in this environment - admin, modeler, querry writer, analyst and report writer. the more i read and learn about cognos this is a product which provides users with modeled data and an environment for them to analyze and report on data plus other things. right now we have our inpatient data modeled and an reporting package setup. i am wondering if someone could provide some good rollout tips and guides. how should i go about rolling this out to end users and what shoudl i enable these users to do. should i  set up a group of  users and provide them with some internal training( i am learning myself) what about some cbts and put them on our intranet or could i link to our cognos portal.

please provide some feedback, suggestions or docuemnts that would help in this case

thanks in advance

Bunker, I don't think you'll find many "standard" answers to your questions because it's so very specific to your company's direct needs and also their culture.  In my company we started small and decided people would only be "consumers" of reports I made - it was an extremely limited rollout that gave people hardly any self-service, but certainly helped things to not get out of control while we were still learning.  Eventually we had users with other roles (like Business Analyst, getting Analysis Studio).  I don't think anyone can advise you on the best rollout plan without knowing what you need to accomplish.  I can tell you that in our case I developed internal training because we didn't want them to learn too much about Cognos features before we were ready.

bunker, angela is right, Cognos access is specific to your company's requirements.  Cognos in itself is just a GUI being applied to any database that you connect to. Cognos's security structure is what can give you from an admin perspective the best standpiont of securing your reports/access while learning how it can help your business.  My company also follows practice with making all users consumers of the application followed by additional access if needed.

Id recommend downloading all Cognos pdf's (Admin/Security, Installation/Configuration, Cognos Connection User Guide) , they are very knowledgeable in instruction.

thanks.
we are kond of getting bogged down as management provide me with report studio and frameowkr manager and expect me model data, write reports ,querry's, scorecards,dashboards.etc. they want me to administrer and buid also. we have some pretty big databases such as meditech and 3 m for medical . most cognos groups are sales and marketsing and finding it hard to be able to shar ??? :P ???e ideas with medical groups

mamagement thinks that you connect to a datsource and easily model and create reports and stuff by just using wizards

i like to be able to convince management to exapnd my role as  acognos bi project manager(complete the online course as refernce material) and develop this as a group project

this is much larger tha n a 1 person show and need to have a team concept...

what are your or any thoughts on this...

any refernce material anyone like to share let me know

Bunker,

Check with your local cognos user group.  I run Cognos for a group of medical/dental clinics and know a few other clinics that use cognos for healthcare reporting.  More then likely, you need to set up a reporting database, reporting directly off of a practice management or EMR will be tough and have terrible performance.

Your operation would benefit from having someone with BI healthcare knowledge, your CPT, ICD9, disease management and HEDIS reporting can make a tremendous improvement in patient care.
