Extremely slow response time over WAN

We are accessing DB2 databases on an AS/400 using ODBC connections. When we run the model from within our LAN environment, the response time is excellent. When the same model is executed within the WAN, the response time is dreadful, to the point where a model can run for several hours and not complete (the same model would complete in less than an hour normally). The bandwidth within the LAN is quite adequate. Single Impromptu reports (with minor logic) have excellent response times across same WAN.

Any thoughts?
