Cognos Analytics on Cloud - confusing info on query mode

G'day, Kia ora, howdy, ola, ...

I am researching what the impact is of moving to Cognos Analytics on Cloud (CAoC) and I am getting confused over the information IBM has online. Perhaps you friendly people can help.

I am only concerned with CAoC Dedicated.

The high level info states that only DQM is available for data source connections. However, the detailed software requirements page shows that certain data sources can use only CQM or either CQM/DQM. E.g. PowerCube is only CQM and SQL Server is either.

Can someone clear up this apparent contradiction for me?

Cheers,

Bluey

Hi Bob,

For Cognos Analytics on Cloud (the Software as a Service offering), there is definitely only DQM access available. If you don't need PowerCubes, then the Report Service is set at 64-bit, meaning CQM is not available. If you tell IBM that you need PowerCube access, they switch the Report Service to 32-bit, to allow PowerCubes to be used as data sources. In theory, this means CQM would be available, however CQM access to databases also necessitates client libraries being installed on the Cognos server (eg SQL Server Native Client) but IBM won't do this. So you're still limited to DQM for access to your data sources.

PowerCubes are built locally on your machine. There is a technote that covers how to configure Transformer to use DQM access to read data from your Cloud CA instance, and IBM give you a specific SFTP folder to upload your built cubes to. There is a process that runs automatically to detect new uploads to the folder and move the cubes into the live CA cloud environment.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks. I got a different understanding, sort of, on what IBM does with the PowerCubes.

Anyway, the doco says only DQM is available. However when you look at the Software Requirements doco for CAoC it shows several data sources can use CQM. E.g. it states SQL Server can use either CQM or DQM!

This is confusing. How can one doc say a CQM data source is valid for CAoC but another doc say only DQM is available?

Based on what you are saying, the CQM data sources CAN be accessed by CAoC but only if 32-bit mode is set in the configuration AND the appropriate ODBC drivers have been installed by IBM. I would assume that is done as part of the migration process that IBM manages.

Hi Bob,

What I wrote above on PowerCubes comes direct from one of the Offering Managers at IBM.

Regardless of what the docs say, I can 100% confirm that you can NOT use CQM access for data sources such as SQL Server in CAoC.

For your last point, sorry - no. I think you misunderstood what I wrote. The only CQM data sources that can be used in CAoC are PowerCubes. IBM won't install any local client drivers on the CAoC instance - including ODBC drivers. This means you cannot use CQM access for anything other than PowerCubes - ie you are restricted solely to DQM access for everything apart from PowerCube access.

So, to summarise

DQM access for all relational sources
CQM access for only PowerCubes (if you request their use).

Hope this helps you clear things up :)

Cheers!
