Hi All,

Right now we are using physical servers as the application servers. Is there any difference interms of performance or any impact if we move our Cognos application to Virtual servers ?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi,

Potentially some difference, yes. A virtual CPU will never be as powerful as the underlying physical CPU, as some of the processing power of the physical CPU is consumed in running the virtualized environment itself. When IBM perform server sizing exercises, they determine whether the installation will be on physical or virtual servers for exactly this reason. When running on virtual servers, in some cases extra cores may be needed vs when running on physical servers.

If you're unsure, reach out to your local IBM account manager and ask them to engage a local IBM technical resource who can help in server sizing. I understand this is a free service (but I might be wrong).

Cheers!

MF.

Hi MFGF,

Thanks a lot for your answer. We will try to connect IBM on this.
