Hi guys,

Newcomer here :) So, my question might seem dumb but here it is:

I have created some active reports which are somewhere on my Cognos portal. My client wants to have access to them from his iPad but as I don't have an iPad/iPhone and I'm new in making active reports, I do not know how the mobile app has access to the portal. Can he just browse through the folders and find the report ? (all permissions have been granted of course) or does the app automatically displays all the reports the user has access to ?

Any help would be great !! Thank you all in advance!!

ps: sending the report by email isn't an option :/

Cheers,

Thomas

Hi,

There are essentially four options for getting active report outputs onto a mobile device. Two are within the Cognos security paradigm and two are not.

1. Have the user connect from the mobile app on their device to the Cognos server. They can log in and browse the Cognos Connection folder structure from within the app, and choose to view saved Active Report outputs. This will "pull" them into the app, albeit with security restrictions. When the user logs in to Cognos, a Lease Key is held in memory in the app, and as long as that lease key is present and has not expired, the user can continue to view the active reports on their device, even when no longer connected to the Cognos server. A lease Key usually persists for three days before expiring. If the user reboots their device or takes the app out of memory, the Lease Key will disappear. If the Lease Key is no longer there or has expired, the user cannot view the active reports - they need to connect up to the Cognos server and re-authenticate to get a new lease key.
2. Have the Cognos server run and send the active report to mobile devices. This is a little like the option to run and email a report, but here the saved active report outputs are delivered to mobile devices the Cognos server knows about - ie mobile devices on which the relevant users have authenticated themselves within Cognos. Again the reports are only available to view as long as there is a Lease Key present on the mobile device. Both of these two options keep the Active Reports secured by the Cognos authentication system.
3. Have the Cognos server run and email the active report to an email address. A user can then open the email on their mobile device, download the attached report, then tap on it within the email. The mobile device will then ask how to open the attachment, and one of the options will be to open it in the Cognos app. In doing this, the report will be copied into the app completely unsecured - ie it can be opened any time, anywhere, with no security restrictions or lease keys required.
4. Have the Cognos server run and save the Active Report output. A user in a browser can then download this saved output to their local workstation. If they then connect up their mobile device to their workstation via a cable (eg connecting an iPad while within iTunes on a PC), they have the option of dragging the saved output to the Cognos app on the iPad as viewed in iTunes - this copies the saved output for the active report to the app on the device. Again, this is unsecured, and the active report can then be opened without needing a Lease Key.

Cheers!

MF.

Thanks a lot for your explanation. I've read all the documentation I could but always ended up having missing information.

Cheers ;)
