Just wondering if these will work ok together? or do they both need to be the same?

I noticed in the Cognos Config I can see the Report Server execution mode to 64-bit or 32-bit. Do that mean it'll work ok with the 32-bit FM?

Will that prevent the install from using more ram etc or will it still have the benefit of being a 64-bit install and be able to utilise the extra memory?

Cheers all.

Hi,

There are no issues with having a 64-bit Cognos server instance and a 32-bit Framework Manager instance. In fact, FM is only 32-bit, so if FM and the server instance both needed to be the same "bitness", you could only ever have a 32-bit server instance (which, of course, is not the case).

Setting the Report Server Execution Mode to 64-bit in your Cognos server instance switches off all 32-bit components of the Report Service. Unless you use Dynamic Query Mode for all data access, this would lead you into lots of trouble, since Compatible Query Mode is 32-bit and is part of the Report Service. If you set the Report Server Execution Mode to 64-bit, you therefore lose the ability to connect to any CQM data source (eg Powercubes, ODBC connections, native client access to databases etc) from your Cognos server instance. You don't need to have the Report Server Execution Mode set at 32-bit to be able to use FM - you can have it set to either and FM will work just fine. If it is set to 64-bit you won't be able to use any packages published using CQM, though.

Is there a pressing need to set Report Server Execution Mode to 64-bit? Probably not. Most of the Cognos instance is 64-bit anyway, and the Report Service is used for CQM access and for rendering reports. If it is set at 32-bit, this means you can potentially have issues when trying to render HUGE report outputs (often data dumps into Excel) but in reality, how often do you have a report output that would blow the 2Gb memory processing limitation of a 32-bit Report Service?

Cheers!

MF.

Awesome!

Thanks for that.

I'll crack on with the test install. Having a little test run as we're upgrading from Windows server 2003 to server 2008. Going from a 32-bit system to a 64-bit. Hopefully it'll give some overall performance improvements aswell.

Cheers MF!
