Hi Cognoisers,

Off late facing a very different issues with cognos. I do not have decrypted cogstartup.xml file backup. Somehow whenever I am trying to open cognos configuration using ./cogconfig.sh

I am getting below error:
CAM-CRM-1280 error occured while trying to decrypt using the system protection keys.

I tried to create the encryption keys again. But it did not help.
I tried reinstalling cognos and replaced the old cogstartup.xml  in the new installation.
Even that is not helping.
That was my old configuration and I need to build new system exactly the same way as old.

Please suggest.

Do you have any other Cognos instance on other server with the similar configuration? If yes try to generate decrypted cogstartup file from there.
Thanks

Hi SK,

I had only once instance for this cognos configuration. So the issue is in case I want to set this up again, I need the configuration values. I can read the xml but not able to identify all values. Its seem tedious process. If anyone can share a document which shows how do I check all these values using xml file, even that would be helpful. I can re-enter these values in the new installation.

Besides, I have tried using this cogstartup with another instance as well.   The second instance which is having difference configuration works fine. But the moment I replace its cogstartup file with my file, it starts giving the same error.

I also tried a fresh installation. But once I replace with this cogstartup.xml anywhere, I am facing the same issue.

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Hello Ana,
Did you change the JAVA_HOME variable by any chance?

Hi Cognos810,

I verified JAVA_HOME value has not changed. Anything else you think can be checked.

Hi,

If you didn't decrypt your configuration before copying cogstartup.xml, you're going to break any Cognos instance you create by trying to insert it. Basically, your only option here is to manually configure a new instance from scratch.

Sorry.

Hi MFGF and all

I would like to make sure that I know how to correctly backup Cognos configuration and content store.  I have the following instructions, but after reading your post I am not sure that I am performing this correctly.  Will you please review and correct any errors I have?

I would only backup both configuration and content store before an upgrade either to Cognos or Java, but the configuration should be backed up in a separate location in case we ever need to rebuild the Cognos server(s).

1. Backup the entire content store by using the Deployment tool and creating a full content store export.
2. In IBM Configuration, from the File Menu, click Export As and save the configuration information in a decrypted format.   Name the file appropriately and save in a secure location.
3. Stop the Cognos service.
4. Backup the existing Cognos cryptographic keys by saving the following files and directories to a secure location:
       Files
c10_location/configuration/cogstartup.xml             - if I ever need to restore the config - copy this decrypted file back to same name and Cognos will re-encrypt when config saved
       c10_location/configuration/caSerial
       c10_location/configuration/cogconfig.prefs
       c10_location/configuration/coglocale.xml
       Directories
       c10_location/configuration/csk
       c10_location/configuration/encryptkeypair
       c10_location/configuration/signkeypair

I have also saved screen shots of our config.

Thank-you in advance for any advice.
