Page Break on Column causes query to run much longer

I have a report that I have Sectioned based on one column. The report takes about 7 seconds to run. I would like to start a new page at the beginning of each section. To create the page breaks, I select the column of the section break, then select Structure > Set Page Break. Cognos (V10.2) creates a new query for this column (why? it already knows about the Section breaks), and it then takes over 3 minutes to run the report. :-(

I have an almost identical report that I added page breaks to, and Cognos did not create a new query. I don't know exactly what I did and haven't been able to repeat it.

How can I page break a report without incurring this much penalty?

Thank you!

Lynn

Try creating a group rather than a section and see if you get the same behavior when setting a page break on the group. You can create a group header to achieve the same look as a section. Sections are annoying.

I had already created a group, and that worked fine. It was when I promoted the first column of the group to a section that the performance problems began. But that's the format i want. How do I recreate that format using only Groups? (I'm pretty new to Cognos, and trying to get my head around this.)

Thank you.

Lynn

Once you group on the column you can go to the structure menu, select headers and footers, and then create a header. Once you've done that you can navigate to the list properties and specify that you want column labels to show at the start of the details rather than at the start of the list.

Thank you, Lynn. That format is acceptable. Now to just figure out why the sort order of the grouped columns is all messed up...

Lynn

Click on the grouped column and then on the sort tool on the toolbar. From there you can specify whatever sorting you want.
