I come Microsoft BI (SSRS, SSAS). We are going to implement Cognos soon. So i have a general question.

So typically in real time let's say for example 100 Cognos reports (operational and analytical) how models do you build in the framework manager.

I understand it all depends on the databases but i want to know your experiences/best practices. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

The ideal answer is one :) Often the world is not that kind, though.

If feasible, you can create a single model that describes all required data sources, models the relevant data to provide consistent, accurate results and presents it as different subject areas. Each of these typically gets published as a separate package and forms the basis of a group of reports.

Sometimes it makes sense to create a (hopefully small) number of separate models, though. If the data is entirely separate and the reporting requirements are completely set apart from what is already built, a modeler may decide to create a new, standalone model and publish just the relevant packages from this. Later on it is possible to link or merge models, too, so it's not a decision that will cause irrevocable pain if it was deemed not to be the correct initial approach.

Cheers!

MF.
