Minimal system requirements compared to version 8.x

I noticed that upon stopping the C10 services no less then 29 partial processes were stopped against a mere 14 when stopping version 8.4.1.  This begs the question how much 'heavier' a C10 environment is compared to 8.4.1 and if it is possible to tune this if not all components are required?

It is bigger than Cognos 8, yes. I alluded to this a while ago when I was suggesting that 2Gb memory for a Cognos 10 server would not really be enough to do anything sensible. You can disable various servces from Cognos Configuration if you don't need them - just as in Cognos 8.

IBM have a (very) complex sizing document that can deliver a magic number if you plug in all the right info about audience and concurrency etc. I was surprised at some of the configs it was suggesting at first, but I suppose there is much more running under the covers in C10.

Cheers!

Stopping the C10 services released a whopping (almost) 1,6 Gig of memory. I also noticed that 2 java processes are running as opposed to the one of Cognos 8.

I tried to get hold of the sizing document you mention. Haven't found it yet. Gonna check which partial processes we'll be able to kill    :o

The way the sizing works is via an internal system - a client or prospect provides answers to fill in on a PDF form, then these details are entered along with a password to the magic sizing system, and the answer appears. How cool is that? :)

I will see if I can find someone in IBM who has a copy of the document and send you a PM if I succeed. Hmmmm.... who do I know in IBM who can help. Oh. I have an idea. Keep an eye on your inbox Ties. :)

After comparing components I found these to be additional in C10

  • Annotation service
    Graphics service
    Human task service
    Index data service
    Index search service
    Index update service
    Query service

Not enabling the Graphics service reduces the memory allocated with roughly 700Mb.  It also spawns just one java.exe (instead of 2)  The other 6 services account for roughly 200Mb

C8 reports still show graphs this way in C10, but I expect that the added C10 Graph engine  is required for the razzle-dazzle graphs..

If you disable this, it means you will be limited to using the classic charting engine (ie the C8 chart technology)

MFGF,

Did you have any joy in acquiring the document?

If so, would you be so kind as to shoot me a copy aswell.

Much appreciated.
When life gives you lemons, throw them at someone.

Hi,

I'm pretty sure it has been through a number of changes and iterations since 2011 to accommodate changes made to the product and newer server technologies. I don't have anything that is remotely up-to-date, sorry.

I will see if I can find anyone at IBM that can help, although the document will be of no use without access to the sizing tool they use, so it will really be "for what it's worth"
