Cognos Planning 10.1.1.2 and Cognos BI 10.2 in a distributed environment

Hi,

We are planning for a large distributed environment in production for Cognos Planning 10.1.1.2 and Cognos BI 10.2 in a distributed environment with a standalone Web Server.

Same Content Store is being used for both Planning and BI for dynamic data extraction from Planning cubes to BI reports.

Single Gateway is being configured so that the users need to access the Cognos Connection portal for Planning and BI as well.
Installation and Configuration for the same has been done as below.

Database is Oracle 11.2.0.3 g

Cognos Planning 10.1.1 FP2 (OS Windows 2008 Server Enterprise 32 bit)--- All components except Gateway were installed and configuration is also done.

Cognos BI 10.2 (OS Windows 2008 Server Enterprise 64 bit)---All Components were installed and Configuration is also done
Web Server (OS Windows 2008 Server Enterprise 32 bit)--- Firstly Cognos 10.2 BI 32 bit Gateway was installed and in the same installation path Cognos Planning 10.1.1 Gateway component has been installed.

Additional Planning Job Server installation and setup is in progress.

All the services are up and running and the Content Store and Planning Store are rightly configured but the issue we were facing when we are trying to open CAC and Analyst in Planning as below.

When opening the CAC the following error occurs:
"An error has occurred while starting IBM Cognos Planning Administrator.
Main form failed to initialize.
Error Details:
Unable to determine if the Planning Tables exist in Content Manager. Please ensure the Planning Service is running."

Unexpected: missing HRESULT parameter"

When opening Analyst the following error occurs:
"Analyst failed to communicate with the Content Manager database. This can happen if the Cognos 10 Planning service is not running. Please check that the service is running."

Error was:

DISP_E_EXCEPTION
Failed HRESULT [0x80020009] Exception occurred."

But still it is not working.

Hey Ratoz,

Since this is a brand new server environment, double check the windows firewall settings; make sure it's completely disabled and then try opening the CAC again (you may need to restart services)

I have checked the Windows Firewall, it is disabled while the server is created.

Also we are in very critical timeline to roll out the Production.

Please help us if any alternative solution is available...

Ok, thanks for checking, I have a few things:

1. On the EP server, which install package was used:  Complete, or Server?
2. Did you apply the EP FP2 updater to the common GW?
3. Are you able to hit the GW URI from the EP machine without any problems?  Is the GW URI added to the IE local intranet zone?
4. From the EP server, are you able to hit the BI dispatcher from IE? (http://bi_server:bi_port/p2pd/servlet/dispatch)
5. Are you using a new CS and PS?
6. Have server groups (in cognos administration (not configuration)) been specified?

Please provide a screenshot of the service configuration on the EP machine (where you set individual services to true or false)

2. Did you apply the EP FP2 updater to the common GW? "YES"
3. Are you able to hit the GW URI from the EP machine without any problems? "YES"  Is the GW URI added to the IE local intranet zone? "YES"
4. From the EP server, are you able to hit the BI dispatcher from IE? (http://bi_server:bi_port/p2pd/servlet/dispatch) "YES"-But I am not able to see any content from this page.
5. Are you using a new CS and PS? "YES"
6. Have server groups (in cognos administration (not configuration)) been specified? "YES"-This Server Groups include the 'System Administrators Role' as members.

Please provide a screenshot of the service configuration on the EP machine (where you set individual services to true or false) "Attached"

Hey Rotaz,

Your EP configuration is incorrect.  Since you are integrating an older version of EP with a newer version of BI (10.2.x), you must follow some very specific configuration steps.

At a high level, You can only use the EP Server install; using the Complete install puts a large number of 'balanced' services onto this machine, which will prevent normal operation.

So, to start getting the configuration back into line:
1. You must uninstall the EP software, removing the IBM folder if it's not removed automatically.
2. Reinstall EP using the Server package and apply FP2.
3. Reconfigure the EP software and start services.
4. Test the CAC.

I will perform all the steps as you have suggested and will come back to you if I face any further issues...

One more small clarification for the installation....I am creating two different instances on different servers for BI and EP.

So as you have mentioned I will go ahead and install only the Server Package in EP server and setup the configuration accordingly..

As you have suggested I have installed the Server and Admin C packages.

Now I am able to open CAC and Analyst as well...

Hi Eric,

While I am trying to migrate the applications (Model and Data only-No Macros, Admin Links) from the Development I am getting some "Unknown Object" error in the Deployment Step.

So while I am trying to import in the Production I am unable to map the Unknown Object to any existing one, hence the import is getting failed. Could you please let me know if I can fix this.

Hey,

I would start a new thread on here as you're now past the install and configuration issues and are now looking at an import issue.  In the new thread, post a screenshot of what you are referring to.
