boy have you opened a can of worms there.

Depending on your environment a Cognos Administrator needs to be\
1.   Aware of network issues.  Get to know netstat, tracert and ping well.
2.   Become a competent DBA for most databases.  We use Oracle, SQL Server and DB2 plus are now looking into Netezza so I need to be able to know how to connect, write and enterpret SQL, and run traces against both native and ODBC connections.
3.   Understand Cognos logging.  Be able to interpret errors and find information on them, usually via Google or forums like this one.
4.   Aware of operating systems and memory settings, path statements and how libraries load and in what order.
5.   Aware of web servers and how to configure and fault find.
6.   Aware of how to use DOS commands as you may be called on to write batch scripts for schedules.  E.g. Trigger utility, or the cubeswap utility.
7.   Aware of how SMTP works.  Get to know SMTP and how it works by using telnet.
8.   Aware of JAVA, JNI and javascripting although this will be the more advanced admin type work.  You will need to have a basic understanding of JNI memory settings as you as the administrator will need to tune the Cognos installation.

9.   Aware of load balancing of distributed Cognos architecture and how to install a Cognos suite to best suit your Business needs.
10. Aware of the differences in browsers and the settings that upset Cognos.  E.g. cross scripting, zoom and javascript etc
11. Able to write a basic report in Report Studio, Analysis Studio, Query Studio and Powerplay Studio
12. Able to build an FM model from scratch or at least understand the theory on datamarts, data warehouses and star schema's and how this will affect the model
13. Have a basic understanding of MDX or OLAP theory.
14. Able to build a transformer model.
15. Able to tune a transformer model.  Use a rule of thumb to calculate the memory requirements.
16. Able to use transformer theory to diagnos cube build performance issue, which also means understanding some aspects of Harddrive mechanics.
17. Able to understand HTML, and Javascript for more advanced reporting in Report Studio if you happen to be called on to reverse engineer a troublesome report.

18. Able to understand the difference between Authentication and Authorization, Inheritance, and encapsulation.
19. Able to understand the basics of kerberos, NTLM, and LDAP and how to implement them in Cognos
20. Able to understand and implement security within Cognos using capabilities and cognos role memberships.
21. Able to understand and implement single signon.

There is more, much more, but I don't want to scare you too much.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Peter

If you're applying for a Cognos Administrator role and you don't understand what the role entails, are you really expecting to be successful based on what you can glean from others? If you were successful and managed to fool the prospective employer into believing you know the role, how would you fare once you start the job? I'm astonished that you think it's acceptable to deceive employers in this way...

MF.
