Hi,
We work with 8.4 and I can find a meassure in log file, or trace file or even audit file  telling me when the sql is sent to the DB and when it's back. If I can find that measure I should able to pinpoint accurately where some report struggle.

Can you tell me if that measure exist first, i can find the information.
and if it exist where i can find it.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Jacques,

I must admit I've never heard of such a measure, although that is not to say it doesn't exist.

The Audit database should tell you how long a report has taken in total to run and then if it is outside your tolerance level you a long with the DBA can investigate the specific SQL element.  You might consider creating an extract to establish the baseline runtime for each report and then use event studio to alert you to long running reports.  Alternatively I've found when users start moaning then this is also a good time to investigate  ;)

To help the DBA you can add context to the SQL that is generated and this would include such items as the request id, session id and report start time.  This can then be tied back to the Audit database entry.

For more information on this look in the Administration & Security Guide

1. System Administration ->
2. Server Administration ->
3. Add Application Context to Dynamic SQL.

If you have time on your hands and you are looking at a more complete monitoring system then investige the use of the IBM System Management Methodoloigy.  This doesn't work at the report level but gives you a way to monitor the overall health of your Cognos system.

hi Rob
Thanks for your aswer, I thing I don't have choice then follow your guidance. It's just the context here to have the DBA working with us on some issue with the report could take a long time, the guys are underpaid and over work. May be they can tell me how to check sql coming for certain source and give the permission to do that, I hope.
For the user moaning your absolutly right, :o,  we are just finishing Q&A , and they already start to find report to long to execute... Anyway thanks again I will look on the bookmark too.
